TLIC Family. Day 317. November 13: The champion of their salvation.

THINK TOGETHER

Do you remember the story of David and Goliath? Can you tell it to each other?

READ TOGETHER

Today we come to the book of Hebrews. Can you find Hebrews in your Bible?

Hebrews is a book that is all about how Jesus is BETTER. Jesus is better than angels. Jesus is better than Moses. Jesus is better than the law. Jesus is better than the temple. Jesus is just better. Why? Because Jesus is our champion!

Were you able to re-tell the story of David and Goliath? Young shepherd boy David is sent by his father to the battlefield to take lunch to his older brothers. When David arrives he finds the entire Israelite army frozen with fear. Why? Because Goliath, the gigantic champion of the Philistines, has challenged Israel to a deadly fight. Send out your greatest champion to face me. Whichever champion survives, that army wins the entire battle.

David courageously faces Goliath, slingshots him in the head, and becomes Israel’s champion, rescuing his brothers (and all Israel) from the fear of death at the hands of their terrifying enemy.

Yay!

But the book of Hebrews tells us that there is a better David. A better champion. Jesus! Listen to how Hebrews describes Jesus here:

Hebrews 2:10-11. But we see…Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the champion of their salvation perfect through suffering.

Hebrews 2:14-15. 14 that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

Jesus is our champion that faced our great enemy, the Devil with his great weapon, the fear of death.

You see, in the David and Goliath story we are not David facing the giant Devil. We are David’s brothers and sisters who are too weak and powerless and afraid to fight. But then, like David, Jesus came to us, he fought for us, and unlike David he even lost for us. Jesus had to lose to win. First he had to die before he could rise again. Only by dying for us could he destroy death by coming back to life. Only by dying for us could he take our punishment for sin.

And it is Jesus’ death on the cross for us that makes him the better David. The greatest champion. The savior of the world!

Because of Jesus our greatest enemies are all defeated.

With Jesus we don’t have to fear the Devil or even death because no matter what we will be with Jesus.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Act out the story of David and Goliath together. Someone can be David, someone Goliath, someone the brothers that were afraid, maybe have a king Saul is you want. Talk about how we are not David in the story that faces our giants, but we are in need of a warrior to rescue us like David did his brothers and countrymen.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

You are my champion! Thank you for defeat the Devil and death and setting me free from fear and separation from God.

Amen.
