TLIC Family. Day 338. December 4: Humble yourselves.

THINK TOGETHER

What does “humble” mean? Do you know anyone that is humble?

READ TOGETHER

Do you know what the word “humble” means? To be humble is to put yourself second. It is to not think about yourself all the time, but instead to think about others. When you are humble you don’t think you’re better than others, but you also don’t think you are worse either, you simply think about others more than yourself. You do what is best for them. Even if that means things are harder for you.

Here’s what Peter said to us about humility in his first letter:

1 Peter 5:6-7. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

In Peter’s day humility was actually considered a bad thing. You weren’t supposed to be humble. You weren’t supposed to put others first. You were supposed to always make yourself look better than everyone else. You were supposed to seek your own glory and fame.

But the way of Jesus is one of humility. Jesus even described himself as humble. Jesus said come unto me because I am humble and kind. Nobody wants to go to someone who only cares about themselves do they? What if Jesus was just a big selfish bully? Would you want to follow him, or love him, and worship him? I wouldn’t either. And for that matter, would Jesus want to come to Earth and rescue us from sin if he wasn’t humble? Nope, he wouldn’t.

The truth is we need Jesus to be humble or he would never save us. And because he did saves us now we can be humble. We can put others first. We can serve them, and be kind to them, and let them go before us in line, and give them our turn. Why? Because we know that with Jesus we already have everything we need and want, so why not give what we have away to everyone else? We know that one day God will exalt us, so why not just be humble?

Because of Jesus one day God will exalt us.

With Jesus we can put others first.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Here’s a good song about Jesus’ humility that you can learn to sing together.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

You humbled yourself and came to Earth to save us. Help me to be humble and live for others too just like you did.

Amen.
