TLIC Family. Day 349. December 15: And this is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith.

Do you have faith? What is something that you have faith in? That you trust in?

READ TOGETHER

One of the most important things we can understand as Christians is that we are living in the middle of a great big fight. Sometimes we call it a “spiritual war.” God v. the Devil. Good v. evil. Light v. Darkness. And as John says in his letter, the world v. faith.

1 John 5:4-5. ⁴ For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. ⁵ Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

What does John mean when he says we are fighting the “world?” For John the world wasn’t the physical planet Earth. It was anything that got in the way of God’s love and grace. Things like pride, and self-righteousness (trying to save yourself). John says that this kind of pride is out to destroy us. It comes from outside of us and tries to get inside of us and make us think that we don’t need God anymore.

Can you think of some things that make you feel pride? Things that make you think that you are better than others? Or things that make you forget how much you need God?

Those things are part of the “world.”

But John has good news for us. He says that everyone that has been “born of God” has overcome the world. If you are saved, if you have trusted in Jesus and his death on the cross to save you, then you have ALREADY been given victory over the world. The world can’t keep you away from God’s love and grace. Not now. Not ever.

Why? Because we have faith. Faith in Jesus “overcomes the world.”

Do you have faith in Jesus? Do you believe that he is the Son of God? Do you believe that he died for your sins so that you can live eternally with God? If you do have this faith, then the world cannot destroy you with its ideas of saving yourself. Those ideas only lead to misery and destruction. But faith in Jesus always leads to life and peace.

Because of Jesus we have overcome the world.

With Jesus our faith in God can get us past the temptations of the world’s pride.

Watch the movie Megamind together (or maybe just this scene). This movie is a case study in the pride of this world – first Megamind and then Titan. Talk about what pride looks like and how it always leads to destruction. Faith in Jesus will destroy our pride. Yay!

Jesus,

I believe in you. I know you have overcome the world so now I can too. You alone are wrothy of all my trust.
