THINK TOGETHER
Do you have any plants or pets in your house? What are some of the things that have to be done to take care of them?
READ TOGETHER
The Bible tells us that God made everything on Earth. God made all the plants, and all the animals, and all the minerals on our planet. And then something amazing happened. God made Adam and Eve and told them to be in charge of everything.
Genesis 1:28. And God blessed Adam and Eve. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
God gave Adam and Eve (and all humans) dominion over the whole earth. Do you know what “dominion” means? It means to have power and authority over something. Adam and Eve were told to reign over the earth like a king and a queen. And guess what – so are we!
But the question is what kind of kings and queens will we be?
Yesterday we learned that we are made in God’s image, which means we are like him. We are his sons and daughters who are supposed to rule like him. And what is God like? He is a trinity, which means he is love. The Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit all love each other. Everything they do is done to make the world a better place that points to goodness and kindness.
And that is exactly the kind of king or queen you are supposed to be. A kind king. A caring queen. God wants us to help him make the world around us better. More kind. More caring. More loving. God wants us to use what he has made to help take care of everyone and everything. God wants us to “fill the earth” with his love.
But sadly, we are often selfish and don’t want to help others. We only want to help ourselves and get our own way. This is called sin. Do you ever sin? Do you ever use what God made to get your own way? We all do.
But Jesus came to show us how to be in charge the right way. Without selfishness. He showed us how to use everything God made to help others. When we trust in Jesus and ask him to connect his life to ours, then we can love everyone no matter what, just like he does. Then we can really fill the earth with the love of Jesus.
Because of Jesus and his kindness, we don’t have to be selfish anymore.
With Jesus we can fill the earth with his love and kindness.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Give your children something to take care of like a plant, or give them a responsibility for helping to care of the family pet. Talk to them about how God wants us to take care of his creation from love, not just from selfish power.
Take some time to watch The Lion King. Talk about the difference between Mufasa’s kingdom and Scar’s kingdom. How did Scar’s selfishness hurt everything in the kingdom?
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus,
You are the king of all the earth and you are my king. Thank you for forgiving me of my selfishness and for giving me the love I need to be a good and kind king or queen.
