THINK TOGETHER
In what ways do you help your family? How does your family help you?
READ TOGETHER
When God finished making the earth, the plants, the animals, the sky, and the water he looked at it and said that it was all “very good.”
When God made the bears he made a boy bear and a girl bear to live together. And when he made the ostriches he made a boy ostrich and a girl ostrich to live together. Boy dolphin and girl dolphin. Boy platypus and girl platypus. When God made all the animals he made them in pairs so that they wouldn’t be alone. But when God first made Adam he was all by himself. And when God saw that Adam was all by himself he said “this is not good.”
Uh oh. What will God do to fix this problem? Listen to this verse and see if you can hear God’s solution:
Genesis 2:18. Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
God decided to make a helper for Adam too. Who do you think Adam’s helper will be?
If you said Eve, you are right!
In the Bible a “helper” is someone who does things for you that you could never do on your own. It is someone who loves you and takes care of you. A helper encourages you, and supports you, and protects you. In fact, in the Bible it says that God is our greatest helper.
So why did Adam need a helper? Why did he need Eve?
Because Adam needed to learn how to love and share and be kind. Just like we do. That’s why we need each other too. That’s why it is “not good for us to be all alone.” Remember, God made us to be his image (see day 2). We were made to look like God. To be a helper without being selfish.
By himself Adam could never learn how to love, and neither can we. That’s why we need to be together.
Sometimes living together with your family will be hard. Sometimes you will disagree and hurt each other’s feelings. But when it is the most hard is when we can choose to love the most. And that’s when we have to trust that God loves us the most.
And do you know who your greatest helper is? It’s not your teacher or your pastor. It’s not your brother or sister. And it’s not even your mom or dad. It’s Jesus!
Jesus came to earth from heaven to do for us what we could never do for ourselves – love perfectly. And then Jesus died on the cross for our sins so that we could be forgiven and live forever with God. And on top of all that, with Jesus you will never be alone. Jesus can live in your heart and help you to love God and love others as we trust that he loves us perfectly and forever! Now that’s a great helper!
Because of Jesus we will never be without help.
With Jesus we can be a helper like him.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Sometime in the next day try to do something for someone that they could not do for themselves. It could be something you do as a family, or as individuals. Tomorrow, share with each other what you did to be helpful.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus,
Thank you for being my greatest helper and for dying for my sins so that I can live with God forever. Show me ways that I can help others today like you.
Amen.
