What’s the difference between saying “I will,” and “I might?”

God never says “I might.”
He always says, “I will.”
Yesterday we learned that God chose Moses to lead his people out from slavery in Egypt. And Moses was very afraid. He didn’t think he would be able to do it. In fact, the first time Moses went to the Pharaoh of Egypt (the king) things didn’t go very well at all. The Pharaoh got really mad at Moses for asking him to release the Hebrew people from slavery. So mad that he made their work even harder than before.
Now all the Hebrew people were mad at Moses.
And Moses was mad at God.
But then God spoke to Moses again and reminded him of his name. Do you remember God’s name? (Yahweh) And do you remember what it means? (I am).
And then God made seven promises to Moses. Listen to what God said to Moses, and see if you can count all seven of God’s promises. Hint: they will all start with “I will.”
Exodus 6:6-7. 6 Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. 7 I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession. I am the Lord.’”
Did you hear all seven promises?
- I will bring you out
- I will deliver you.
- I will redeem you.
- I will make you my people.
- I will be your God.
- I will bring you back to the promised land.
- I will make the land your possession.
You see God never, ever says “I might.” God never says “I might forgive you.” Or “I might take away your sins.” Or “I might be with you wherever you go.” Or “I might love you.” Or “I might bring you to heaven someday.”
He always says “I will.” God is never afraid to make promises to us because he knows that he will always be able to keep all of his promises.
Jesus is the answer to all of God’s promises. Because of Jesus God can say “I WILL” instead of “I might.” Because of Jesus God will forgive us. Because of Jesus God will always love us. Because of Jesus God will bring us to heaven to live with him forever.
Because of Jesus all of God’s promises to us will come true.
With Jesus I can always trust God to keep his promises.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Brainstorm a list of the things that God has promised to us. (Heb. 13:5 – he will never leave us; John 3:16 – eternal life; Rom. 8:28-29 – all things work for good in making us like Jesus; Phil. 4:19 – God will supply our needs; 1 John 3:1-2 – God will always love us as his children).
Help your child understand that God did not promise us an easy life or a life free from hard and bad things. But he did promise to use all the hard and bad things to help us be like Jesus.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus,
Because of you I know God will always love me and bring me to live with him someday. Help me to trust God more and more each day.
