TLIC FAMILY. DAY 30. JANUARY 30: YOU WILL BE.

THINK TOGETHER

What is an example? Who has been an example to you?

READ TOGETHER

They made it!

God has brought the Hebrews out of Egypt, through the Red Sea, across the wilderness and has led them to Mount Sinai. Mount Sinai is where God appeared to Moses in the burning bush. Mount Sinai is where the Hebrew people will learn how to worship God and God will make great big promises to them.

Here’s a picture of Mount Sinai:

On top of Mount Sinai God made three great big promises to the Hebrews through Moses. Listen to what God said to Moses and see if you can hear the three big promises:

Exodus 19:5-6 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”

What was promise #1? You will be my treasured possession. God loves the people so much and wants to make them his own.

What was promise #2? you shall be priests. Do you know what a priest is? A priest is the person who helps others and prays for others. A priests shows people how to love and worship God. The Hebrews will be God’s priests.

What was promise #3? you will be a holy nation. The word “holy” means special, or different. The Hebrews will be God’s special people who will obey God.

Why did God make all these promises to the Hebrew people? Is it because he loves them more than he loves everyone else? Is God making the Hebrews special because they are the best people?

Nope.

Remember the Hebrews were slaves in need of being rescued. And in the wilderness all they ever did was complain and argue.

God doesn’t ever love anyone because they deserve it. And God doesn’t ever love one person or group more than he loves another person or group. God loves everyone exactly the same. And God loves everyone because he is good and because of his grace. God IS love.

So why did God choose to make these promises to the Hebrews? God chose to make the Hebrews his people, his priests, and his holy nation so that they could be an example to everyone else of how good, how kind, how loving, and how fair God is.

God sent Jesus to save us because he is so good. And God didn’t choose to love us because we were so special. We are special because God chose to love us. And now, because God loves us and has forgiven us through Jesus, we can be an example to others of what God’s goodness, and kindness, and love, and fairness look like.

Because of Jesus God will be good to me even though I’m not good.

With Jesus I can be an example of God’s love and kindness.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

What is a way that your family can show kindness this week?

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

Because of you I belong to God. Help me be an example to others of your love and kindness today.

Amen.
