TLIC FAMILY. DAY 66. MARCH 7: ONE THING.

THINK TOGETHER

What is the most important thing to you?

READ TOGETHER

The Psalms were written to help us know God, but also they help us to know ourselves. And one way that the Psalms help us is by showing us how loving and worshiping God should be the most important thing in the world to us. Listen to how King David describes it in Psalm 27:

Psalm 27:4. One thing have I asked of the Lord,
    that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
and to inquire in his temple.

King David is reminding us that there is nothing better in all of life than knowing and loving God. And there is nothing better than being with God. Why? Because God will never stop loving you, no matter what you do. God will always be good. God will always be beautiful. God will always do what is the best thing. God will never sin, and never be mean, and never do anything wrong. Never, ever.

Now as you grow up, all kinds of other things are going to try to be the most important thing in your life. And most of these things will even be good. Things like playing a sport, or having a boyfriend or girlfriend, or getting good grades. Sometimes adults make their job the most important thing. Or their family. Or how they look. Or their education.

It’s very easy for things to become more important than God in our hearts. But we must remember two important things when this starts to happen:

First, all of those good things that are trying to become the most important thing in your heart came from God in the first place. So let those good things point your heart to the BEST thing – God!

Second, all of those important things will let you down eventually. Your stuff will break, Your team will lose. Your friends will be mean. You’ll get a bad grade. And if these things are your most important thing then you are likely to feel very angry, or discouraged. When something good becomes your most important thing it can start to control you, and then that good thing turns you into a bad person.

But when we make Jesus our most important thing, that will never happen. When Jesus controls you, you only become better and better, like him. You become less selfish, and less mean, and less afraid of losing something. When you make Jesus your most important thing, he will never let you down. He will always love you and always be with you. You can always go to him, and pray to him, and count on him, forever.

Because of Jesus loving and worshiping God can be our most important thing.

With Jesus we don’t have to ever be afraid of losing our most important thing.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Have everyone name something that is very important to them. Ask, “What is one way this thing might disappoint you or let you down?” Remind each other that God will never disappoint us. He’ll never stop being good or loving us.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

You are the most important person to me. Help me to know that I will never spend a single moment without you.

Amen.
