THINK TOGETHER
Do you know what truth is? Do you know what grace is?
READ TOGETHER
John starts out his gospel telling us all about Jesus:
- Jesus is God.
- Jesus was with God.
- Jesus created everything.
- Jesus is life.
- Jesus is light.
- Jesus became a person (flesh).
- Jesus is the glory of God.
And now John adds that Jesus is “full of grace and truth.” Listen to John 1:14 one more time:
John 1:14. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Do you know what grace is?
Grace is God treating us with kindness and love even when we don’t deserve it.
Do you know what truth is?
Something is true if it is correct or without any mistakes. And in the Bible truth is often connected with telling the truth to someone who is sinning, or doing something wrong.
So if Jesus is full of the grace and truth of God what does that mean?
It means that Jesus will always point out our sins, and then he will always forgive our sins, and love us no matter what. Jesus doesn’t like it when we sin, but he always still likes us.
How do we know?
Because of the cross. On the cross Jesus died for our sins. That means that our sins are very, very serious and bad. But it also means that our sins are forgiven and removed from our “report card.” This is why the cross of Jesus is the most glorious thing ever – because the cross is where grace and truth collided. Every sin was exposed (truth) and every sin was forgiven (grace).
Because of Jesus every sin has been forgiven by God’s grace.
With Jesus we can be sure that God loves us even when we hear the truth about our sin.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Talk together as a family about specific ways that you can show grace to each other.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus,
You are God’s grace and truth. Thank you for telling me about my sin and saving me anyway because you love me.
Amen.
