Do you ever pray? What do you pray for?

READ TOGETHER

Jesus taught us many things about how to live our lives with God, including how to pray to God. He even gave us a model prayer to follow. Sometimes we call it the “Lord’s Prayer.” But it might be better to call it “Our Prayer to the Lord.” It’s simple. It’s radical. It goes like this:

Matthew 6:9-13.

⁹ Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
¹⁰ Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
    on earth as it is in heaven.
¹¹ Give us this day our daily bread,
¹² and forgive us our debts,
    as we also have forgiven our debtors.
¹³ And lead us not into temptation,
    but deliver us from evil.

Let’s break down this amazing prayer together.

Our father – This may be the most important part of the whole prayer. We get to call God, Dad. We are his children who pour out our hearts to him.

in heaven – Our dad rules the whole universe. He looks down from the heavens and sees and knows everything.  

hallowed be your name – The word “hallowed” means holy, special, or pure. Yes, he’s our dad, but he’s also the only one that we worship.

Your kingdom come – Our dad in heaven is building an awesome city for us that will one day come down from heaven to earth, and Jesus will reign forever and ever!  

your will be done –God’s will is for Jesus to be exalted, and worshiped, and loved by everyone. And that can happen right now in your heart.  

Give us this day our daily bread – Our dad cares about our everyday life. Every day you can count on Jesus to give you what you need.

and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors – through Jesus and his cross our dad has forgiven us of our sins forever. Now we can forgive others too.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil – By dying on the cross for us, Jesus has rescued us from our evil enemy, Satan. Yes, we might still be tempted to sin, but we never have to sin. And when we do sin, we are always forgiven and loved by God no matter what we do.

And that’s good news!

Because of Jesus God is our Father that will always take care of us. 

With Jesus you can always talk to God like he’s your dad.

Practice praying the Lord’s Prayer together. Try to memorize it if you can.
