TLIC FAMILY. DAY 163. JUNE 12: ALSO IN POWER.

THINK TOGETHER

Words are powerful. Have your words ever hurt someone? Helped someone?

READ TOGETHER

God’s word is powerful. In Genesis when God spoke things appeared. He said, “Let there be light and there was light.” Every time God speaks something happens. That’s power.

And God’s written word, the Bible, is powerful too. When we read the story of God from the Bible something happens inside of us. That’s power.

God’s most powerful word is the gospel. The good news of Jesus. The Bible says that the gospel is the power of God for salvation. The gospel has the power to save us and change us so that we become like Jesus. There’s nothing more powerful than that.

After Paul met Jesus he became a missionary taking the good news of Jesus to people all over the world. One of the places Paul went was to the Greek city of Thessalonica. In Thessalonica Paul shared the good news and many people received Jesus. But others we angry at Paul for sharing the good news. They thought Paul was a trouble maker and they didn’t like how the good news of Jesus was powerfully changing people’s lives and making them different.

Later Paul would write these words to the Christians in Thessalonica:

1 Thessalonians 1:5.because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.

How does Paul describe the gospel?

He calls it both words and power. Why? Because words are powerful aren’t they? When you say something mean people feel bad. And when you say something kind people feel good. That’s power. We all have the power to change how someone feels and acts because of our words.

And, like we said, God’s word is powerful too. Especially the gospel. Hearing that God loves you, and forgives you, and will never leave you no matter what is powerful. The word of Jesus fills us up with hope, and faith, and love.

Hope that we will be with Jesus forever.

Faith to keep trusting God no matter how hard life gets.

And love to share with others because we know that God first loved us.

And that is why we need to hear God’s word often. Because it has the power to change us. It has the power to fill us with hope, faith, and love. It has the power to make us like Jesus.

Is God’s word changing you?

Because of Jesus the power of the gospel is inside of us.

With Jesus we can use the power of the gospel to love others and share Jesus with them.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Together list some of the kind words we can say that are powerful. List some of the mean words we can say that are powerful. How do God’s words give us power? Is he kind or is he mean?

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

Your word is powerful and can change my heart. Please change my heart with your good news.

Amen.
