Do you know what a temptation is? What temptations do you face each day?
Everybody faces temptation. Temptation is a feeling we get that makes want to do something wrong. What temptations did you say that you face? A temptation to tell lies? A temptation to punch your brother? A temptation to talk back to your parents? A temptation to brag?
Let’s look at how Paul encourages us when we are tempted:
1 Corinthians 10:13. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
One thing that you need to learn as you grow up is that temptations are a normal part of life. Temptations are always going to be there. You will never outgrow temptations. Even Jesus was tempted to do wrong things – but he never did. We are tempted to do wrong things and we often do.
But the promise that God makes to us is that we don’t have to do wrong. We don’t have to sin when we are tempted. There is always “a way of escape.”
So how do we escape temptations when they come our way? How do we say no to sin?
We remember what the Apostle Paul says – “God is faithful.” This means that God keeps his promises to us. His promise to love us no matter what. His promise to never quit on us. His promise to bring us to heaven. His promise of being with Jesus forever.
Trusting God is the way to escape temptations. When we are tempted to sin we are tempted to trust in ourselves. But we don’t have to trust ourselves or look out for ourselves. We can trust God to look out for us. Why? Because he sent Jesus to die for us. And if he loved us enough to do that for us, won’t he also love us so much that we don’t have to sin in order to feel special?
Of course he will.
Because of Jesus God will always be faithful to us.
With Jesus we can escape any temptation.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
The Little Mermaid is a great movie for talking about temptation. Why did the Little Mermaid give up her voice? What tempted her? In what way did she fail to trust her father?
Even when I’m tempted and even when I sin, I know that you love me still. Help me to say no to sin because I love you too.
