TLIC FAMILY. DAY 198. JULY 17: ONE BODY.

THINK TOGETHER

What if our bodies were made up of just one part – like all hands, or all eyeballs?

READ TOGETHER

Have you ever been part of something bigger than yourself? I know you have. Like your family. Or a sports team. Or your school class. Or your church.

Part of growing up as a Christian is learning how Jesus allows us to be ourselves, and at the same time he wants us to be part of something bigger than ourselves. When Jesus saves us he puts us into his body. We become part of the church where we learn to work together to show Jesus to the world.

Listen to how the Apostle Paul explains it here in 1 Corinthians:

1 Corinthians 12:12. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.

A body has many parts – eyes, ears, hands, feet. But it is still just one body. And that’s exactly how we are. We are one body part, and part of one body at the same time. With Jesus we get to be ourselves and we get to contribute to something way more important than just ourselves. Like playing on a team. Each player on a team has a job to do, but they are also trying to help the whole team. That is what being a Christian is like. We do the job that God asks us to do, we play our position, but all for the good of the whole team – the whole church.

Some people want to do everything by themselves. They don’t like being on a team. Have you ever felt this way? Or maybe you try to be like everyone else sometimes, instead of being the part that God wants you to be.

God wants us to be our own position on his team. Why? Because God himself IS a team. God is the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. God is one God made up of three persons. God moves and acts as one and at the same time the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit each have a different job to do. They are like a body, or an orchestra, or a football team. Different parts working together.

And when you trust in Jesus to save you, he puts you on the team. He puts you into his body as a hand or a foot, or an eye or an ear. He fits you into his orchestra playing your part in his symphony. Jesus lets you be yourself while teaching you to not be selfish. And when we are part of Jesus’ team we are showing God to the world.

Because of Jesus we are part of something bigger than ourselves.

With Jesus we can do our part to show God to others.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Watch a sport together. Talk about how each player has a different job, but is part of one big team trying to accomplish something together.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

You have made me part of your body, your team. Help me to do my part and help the church to show God to others.

Amen.
