Have you ever had a fight with a friend? What happened?
Reconciliation is a long word that means that two people who were enemies are now friends. The enemies have reconciled and now they like each other.
The Bible tells us that without Jesus we are not reconciled to God at all. We are his enemy. That’s how every single person is born, as the enemy of God. But listen to how Paul talks about our reconciliation here in 2 Corinthians (notice how many times he says the word reconciled):
2 Corinthians 5:18-20. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
Reconciliation is a beautiful thing. Especially reconciliation with God. God loves us so much that he sent Jesus to “reconcile us to himself.” God couldn’t stand the idea of sin keeping us apart, so Jesus came and died for all our sins. Now our sins (Paul calls them trespasses here) are no longer “counted against us.” What amazing love! Because of God’s great love for us we now have peace with God. When we receive Christ as our Savior we are no longer God’s enemies – we’re his best friends.
And then Paul says that we have been “given the ministry of reconciliation.” What do you think that means?
I think it means that we are able to help other people know that God loves them too. We can tell others about Jesus and how he takes away our sins and makes it so that we too can be God’s friend rather than his enemy. And that’s great news worth sharing.
Because of Jesus we are reconciled to God as his friend.
With Jesus we can help others be God’s friend too.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Talk about who you might need to be reconciled with. Is there anyone that you have hurt that you need to apologize to? Is there anyone that you can tell about Jesus so that they might also be reconciled to God?
Thank you for being my best friend. Help me to tell others about your love and friendship too.
