THINK TOGETHER
What is one good thing that you will do today – or did do today?
READ TOGETHER
Every single person has an important choice to make about their life – will they live it for the Lord Jesus or will they live it for themselves? This is a choice that you will make a million times over the course of your life. Listen to how Paul says it to us here in Colossians 3:
Colossians 3:18-4:1. 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord… 23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
Paul talks to children in these verses. What does he tell children to do? (obey your parents)
Yes, children should obey their parents, but WHY? Why do we obey our mom and dad? Because it pleases the Lord Jesus.
You see, you can obey your mom and dad for your own sake – maybe to earn rewards or avoid punishments. Or you can obey your mom and dad for Jesus’ sake – because you love him and want to please him. Jesus loves your mom and dad and he wants you to love them too. And Jesus wants you to learn how to love and obey your parents just like he wants you to learn to love and obey God.
Now look at verse 23 again. Paul says to do WHATEVER “as for the Lord.” We talked about this same idea in yesterday’s devotional. As a Christian we can do “whatever” we want as long as we can do it “as for the Lord.”
Because we are connected to Jesus we are able to do every good thing (like obeying our parents) for the very good reason of pleasing Jesus. We can do what pleases Jesus simply because we love and trust him.
Because of Jesus we are able to do everything for God.
With Jesus we can choose to do the good thing for the good reason – loving him.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Help your children to list something good that they will do or did do today (see the Think Together above). Talk to them about why they did it. Did they do it “as to the Lord?” Did they do the right thing for the right reason?
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus,
Help me to do everything for your glory today just like you did everything for the Father’s glory.
Amen.
