TLIC FAMILY: PROVERBS. DAY 42. FEBRUARY 11: PROFIT.

THINK TOGETHER.

What makes a person successful?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 3:13-14. 13Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, 14for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold.

We live in a world that thinks that making as much money as you can is the way to be successful and happy. In Solomon’s day they didn’t have paper money or electronic money on debit cards like we do today. Instead they had coins made out of silver and gold. But Solomon knew from experience that being rich doesn’t mean that you will be happy and it definitely doesn’t mean that you are wise.

Do you remember how the book of Proverbs defines wisdom? Wisdom is the fear of the Lord. It is knowing, loving, and trusting God, caring about what he cares about. Often (but not always) having more money actually makes us less wise. It makes us trust our money more than we trust God. The New Testament says that the love of money brings with it all kinds of evil. People have done some pretty terrible things in order to get more money haven’t they? Maybe you’ve even been tempted to do something bad in order to get more money. I know I have.

Jesus asked, “What does it profit a person if they gain the whole world but lose their own soul?” Jesus was agreeing with Solomon, warning us that we can try to get more and more things in this world but in the process we can fail to trust him for what we need. Especially our need for forgiveness and grace in order to go to Heaven. The biggest mistake we can ever make is to try to get rich on Earth and fail to get the riches of Heaven that come from trusting in Jesus to save us.

Because of Jesus we will have the riches of Heaven one day.

With Jesus we don’t have to be rich in this life to be wise. We just trust God.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Two days ago we talked about making a plan to teach your kids to be givers of their money. How is that going? Giving shows that we don’t trust in money more than God.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, you are my riches. Help me to be wise and trust you more than money and what the world calls success. Amen.
