THINK TOGETHER.
Do you like to sleep? Why or why not?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 6:9. How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep?
Usually when you’re younger sleeping too much is not a big problem. Your mom and dad might actually wish you would stay in bad longer. But often as we get a bit older we tend to turn the good gifts of God into gods themselves. And sleep is a very good gift of God isn’t it? Rest is important to God. He commands us to rest. But too much rest is bad for us. We must find the balance between work and rest.
I know for me it is not just literal sleep that tempts me, it is often tempting to just lie around and do nothing. Watch TV. Scroll on my phone. Put off the things that I am supposed to get done until later. Do you try to do that too? Do you try to put off what mom and dad or others ask you to do? Do you spend a lot of time doing things that aren’t necessarily helpful? Would you rather play than do any work? Are you a sluggard?
In the New Testament we are told to wake up and stop sleeping too. Not physically but spiritually. Listen to how the Apostle Paul says it here in Romans:
Romans 13:11. Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
When Paul says that our salvation is near he means the return of Jesus. Jesus is coming back for us – soon! So wake up! Get out of bed! Get ready! Don’t be a spiritual sluggard. Jesus wants to do his work in your heart and through your life. Will you let him?
Because of Jesus we can wake up spiritually and trust his finished work today.
With Jesus we can work hard for him, knowing that he is working in us.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Plan a work project together as a family. Possibly find someone in need that could use some work done around their house.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, you are at work in me and through me. Help me to not “sleep” through what you are doing. Amen.
