TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. MARCH 20: FALSE WITNESS.

THINK TOGETHER.

Why is honesty so important?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 6:16-19. 16There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: 19 a false witness who breathes out lies.

All the sin in the world began with a lie. Do you remember what it was? The serpent lied to Eve and told her that she wouldn’t die if she disobeyed God and ate from the Tree of Knowledge. And we’ve all been telling lies ever since. Have you ever lied to stay out of trouble, or to get someone else in trouble? If you have then you have been a false witness.

What’s even worse is that Solomon is describing a person who has told so many lies that it’s as normal as breathing to him. Lies just sort of come out. Everything this person says is hard to trust. Is lying easy for you? I truly hope not.

God hates lies. Do you? But why do you hate them? Sometime we hate lying for selfish reasons or proud reasons. We think, “Good people don’t lie so I will never lie.” But we need to hate lying because we trust God, not because we trust ourselves to be good. We lie because we fail to see God as good, as enough to make us happy, and so we lie to feel better or to get out of trouble. But it never actually makes us feel good does it.

Jesus never lied. He never fibbed to get out of trouble. He never exaggerated. He never covered things up. Why not? Because he trusted God. He knew that the truth sets us free. And like Jesus we have the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, living in us to guide us toward the truths of trusting Jesus, so that we never have to lie again.

Because of Jesus we have the Spirit of Truth in us.

With Jesus we never have to lie.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Have everyone write the words TRUE and FALSE on two separate pieces of paper. Take turns saying things that are either true or false and have others hold up the paper for which they think it is – true or false. Talk about how important it is that we be able to discern truth from lies as we grow up and learn to trust God’s truth.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, you are the truth! Help me to be honest even though I might get in trouble. I trust you. Amen.
