THINK TOGETHER.
How peaceful is your house? Why or why not?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 6:16-19. 16There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: 19… and one who sows discord among brothers.
We’ve come to the last of the seven sins in Solomon’s list. God hates sin. He hates pride, lies, violence, making wicked plans, running toward evil, telling lies, and sowing discord. Discord?
Discord is a word that means that people are arguing and fighting with each other. To sow discord is to cause these arguments and fights. When you sow a seed you plant it in the ground so that it will grow larger. When you sow discord you say and do little things that become much bigger problems. How? Maybe by saying something that is mean. Or maybe by gossiping. Or maybe by refusing to share, or play nicely with others. Do you stir up trouble? Do you tattle-tale? Are you a gossip? A know-it-all? Do you tell half-truths that make people mad? I hope not.
In the New Testament, James, the brother of Jesus, tells us that we can sow seeds of peace not discord:
James 3:18. a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
Jesus wants us to plant seeds of peace not trouble. He always wants us to say nice things about others, and sometimes he just wants us to be quiet, because that is what will be the most peaceful. The good news is that peace is always possible because when we have Jesus we have peace in our hearts. We don’t have to stir up trouble in order to feel good because the love of Jesus makes us feel good. Instead we can help end trouble by sowing the seeds of God’s love.
Because of Jesus we have God’s peace inside of us.
With Jesus we can sow seeds of peace and love.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Plant a “Peace Garden” together. Watch your seeds grow over time. When you get upset go water your peace garden.Watch the peace in your house grow with your garden.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, you are the best peacemaker ever. Help me to plant peace wherever I go. Amen.
