THINK TOGETHER.
How do you remember things? Do you write them down?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 7:3. bind [my teachings] on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.
Sometimes when I don’t want to forget something I have been known to write I on my hand with a marker. That way every time I look at my hand I am reminded of the thing I don’t want to forget. That is what Solomon is telling his children to do with God’s teachings – bind them on your fingers.
But Solomon doesn’t really want us to write everything God says on our hands (could you imagine writing out the whole Bible on your fingers?). He wants us to write it on our hearts. Not our literally heart, he means that inside part of us the decides what we love and care about. In other words, Solomon wants his kids to remember, love, and care about what God cares about. Does that describe you?
The problem is that no one can write God’s teachings on their own heart. No one can love and obey God on their own. That’s why when we trust in Jesus to save us he comes and lives inside our hearts where the Holy Spirit writes God’s laws.
Hebrews 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
This is great news because it means that we don’t have to change our own hearts. Jesus is changing our hearts for us by the love of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. That means that when you trust Jesus you also love him and love his teachings. They are written on your heart. You want to love and obey him because he first loved you.
Because of Jesus our hearts are already changed.
With Jesus we want to obey God’s teachings.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Where does your family write down what you need to remember? A calendar? A notepad? What about school assignments? Talk about how the Holy Spirit is writing what we need to remember about God’s love in our hearts.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, keep writing your love on my heart. Amen.
