TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. APRIL 8: GOLD.

THINK TOGETHER.

What is the most valuable thing you own?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 8:10-11. 10Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold, 11for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her.

Lady Wisdom is claiming that what she is teaching us, her instruction, her knowledge, is far more valuable than silver, gold, and jewels. In fact, it is better than anything else in the world. In verse 10 she wants us to not only listen to her instruction but to also take it. This is something we actively do. We go after wisdom to grab hold of it. We don’t snatch up money, we snatch up wisdom.

Now the world around you will tell you that making money is the most important thing you can do. I was talking to a young lady yesterday who told me that she was working 14 hours a day at her job, but she didn’t care because the money was so good. But is that wise? Recently I heard another young woman say that she would not marry a man unless he made $200,000 a year or more. But is that wise? A few days ago I met with a young man who told me that he thought if he had more money, more people would like him. But is that wise?

Maybe you are already thinking about how much money you want, or what job you will have so that you will make lots and lots of money. But that’s not wise, that’s foolish and greedy. Jesus warned us about wanting money more than we want God. He said, “You cannot serve God and money at the same time.”

Jesus gave up all his wealth in Heaven to come to earth and be poor. Why? So that he could love us, serve us, and die for us on the cross. And so that he could share his heavenly wealth with us when we meet him there. That’s wisdom.

Because of Jesus we already have all of God’s wealth waiting for us in Heaven.

With Jesus true riches is knowing him, not having money.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Develop a money plan with your kids. Talk about their relationship to money? How do they earn it? Are they offering it back to God? Saving it? Sharing it?

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, you gave up everything for me because love was worth more than silver and gold to you. Help me to put you and others ahead of money. Amen.
