TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. MAY 6: HEED INSTRUCTION.

THINK TOGETHER.

Have you ever been led astray by someone?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 10:17. Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.

Sadly, the fool who rejects reproof (correction) takes other fools down a bad path with them. But the wise person is always teachable. They heed (listens to) instruction. And when they do it puts the wise person on the path of life.

With Jesus we can say the first part of this proverb backwards. “Whoever is on the path of life heeds instruction.”

If you are a Christian, then you are on the path of life. When we trust in Jesus to save us we have eternal life with him. We are on the path of God’s life, led by the Holy Spirit who lives inside of us. Nothing can take us off of that path. With Jesus we are saved forever. And when we have Jesus we not only have eternal life we also have a new heart that listens to Jesus’ instruction because we love him and want to obey him. Here’s how the Apostle Paul says it in Romans:

Romans 6:17 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart.

Do you heed instruction? Do you listen to God’s instruction? Do you obey because you have to or because you want to? With Jesus our “Have To” can become our “Want To.”

Because of Jesus we are on the path of life.

With Jesus we want to listen to him and obey him.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Go on a hike together as a family on a marked trail. Likely there are signs, markers, and instructions along the path. Talk about why it is important to HEED those instructions along the hike. What happens when we reject the signs? Life on God’s trail means looking to Jesus and following him.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, I want what you want. Help me to heed instruction from you and obey you from the heart. Amen.
