TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. MAY 8: RESTRAINT.

THINK TOGETHER.

Do you talk too much? What would other people say?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 10:19. When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.

Restraint is an important character trait to develop as you grow up. What is restraint? It is like self-control. It is the ability to not do or say something when you really want to do or say that thing. When that sarcastic comeback pops into your head, restraint keeps you from saying it out loud. When that mean insult is on the tip of your tongue, restraint keeps it inside.

Some people say whatever comes into their mind, even if it is sarcastic or mean. They say that they are just being honest or being their true self. But Solomon would say, “No, you’re being a sinful fool.”  God doesn’t want us to say everything that comes into our mind, even if it is true. Just because something is true doesn’t mean it is kind or helpful to say.

In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul told the Ephesians to only say things that build up. That means we should only say things that help a person to feel encouraged. Kind things. Helpful things. And when you do have to say something hard to someone, say it with love. If you can’t say it with love, don’t say it. Restrain your lips and be wise.

But with Jesus we can say things with love. Why? Because Jesus is always loving us and always speaking to us his words of love. Listen to him! Then, and only then, speak, making sure your words sound like his.

Because of Jesus we can hear God’s words of love to us.

With Jesus we can say only what is loving.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Agree to use the “Before you speak, think” method. T- is it true? H- is it helpful? I – is it inspiring? N – is it necessary? K – is it kind? Make a “T.H.I.N.K.” sign or poster and hang it where everyone can see.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, help me to think before I speak and not say everything that pops into my head. Mostly help me to listen to your words of love to me. Amen.
