TLIC FAMILY. DAY 130. MAY 10: LIVING WATER

THINK TOGETHER

Can you think back to a time when you were really thirsty?

READ TOGETHER

John’s gospel loves to tells us stories about Jesus. But it also loves to tell us the actual conversations that Jesus had with people. In John chapter four a conversation is recorded between Jesus and a woman at a well. Now back then it was very strange for a man and woman to talk to each other alone. And it was really strange for a man who was a Jew to talk to a woman who was a Samaritan.

Why? Because Jews and Samaritans hated each other. Samaritans were a different race than the Jews and they worshiped God differently from the Jews. So when Jesus stopped and talked to this Samaritan woman he was teaching us something very important about how to love people who aren’t exactly like us. God loves everyone and so should we. But what’s also important is what Jesus said to the woman. Since they had met at a well, Jesus started talking to the woman about water. Here is what he told her:

John 4:13-15. 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water [from the well] will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”

Jesus told the woman that there is a water that gives us eternal life not just physical life. How many drinks have you had so far today? What about yesterday? Why do you need to keep drinking? That’s right – because you get thirsty again and again.

But when you receive Jesus’ love and forgiveness you will never be thirsty in your heart ever again. Yes, you’ll be thirsty in your mouth again physically, but you will never be thirsty spiritually again. You’ll never lack someone to love you and care for you because God is always there loving you and caring for you no matter what.

Because of Jesus you will never have to be “thirsty” for love again.

With Jesus and his love, you can care for others even when they are different from you.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Look in your fridge at all the different kinds of drinks you have. Which one will quench your thirst forever? Talk about how Jesus quenches our thirst forever.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, you are my living water. With you I always know I am loved and I always can love others too. Amen.
