THINK TOGETHER

What do you know about the Holy Spirit?

In the Old Testament God was NEAR his people, AROUND his people, and even UPON his people. And then when Jesus came to earth as a person God was WITH his people. But today God has something even better for all of us who trust in Jesus – God is IN his people. Listen to how Jesus explains it to his disciples:

John 14:16-20. ¹⁶ And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, ¹⁷ even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. ¹⁸ “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. ¹⁹ Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. ²⁰ In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 

Jesus is about to die on the cross and he knows that after he dies for our sins he will be resurrected and then taken back up into heaven by God the Father. The disciples are scared. They love Jesus and don’t want him to leave. But Jesus promises them that if he leaves he will send the Holy Spirit (the Helper) to live inside of them. And if the Holy Spirit lives in them it is the same as if Jesus and the Father are also living inside of them.

This amazing truth is called union with Christ. When you become a Christian by trusting in Jesus for forgiveness and receiving his life as a free gift, you are joined to Jesus forever by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit comes and lives IN you forever. And then the Holy Spirit inside of you begins to show you how much Jesus loves you, and he begins to teach you how to be like Jesus.

Now, with the Holy Spirit, we can learn to trust Jesus more and more so that more and more we love God and others just like he does.

Because of Jesus we have the Holy Spirit to remind us of God’s love for us.

With Jesus and the Holy Spirit, we can love God and others more each day.

Watch You’ve Got a Friend in Me from Toy Story together. As your kids watch the Toy Story song remind them that their best friend is Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Jesus, thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to live in our hearts and remind us of your love. Amen.
