TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. JULY 7: HONEYCOMB.

THINK TOGETHER.

Do you like honey?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 16:24. Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.

Did you know that honey never goes bad? That’s right, honey can sit on the shelf for thousands of years and you can still eat it. In fact, archaeologists (do you know what an archaeologist is?) have found honey from ancient Egypt that was still good. It was buried with King Tut next to all his gold.

Have you ever seen a bee hive with a honeycomb? The honey drips off the comb in all its ooey gooey glory. Honey tastes great in tea, on toast, in cereal, candy, and many other things we eat. Honey can also keep you healthy and prevent allergies.

It’s no wonder that Solomon compares our words to honey. When we say gracious things (kind, nice, encouraging, honoring) those words can sit inside a person’s heart forever. They never go bad, just like honey. They are sweet to the soul and the body. They make others feel good all over.

Never, ever forget how powerful your words are. Encouraging words can help someone who is anxious or worried, or someone who is sad. Gentle words can take away a person’s anger. Honest words can help a person to know what is true and right. Most importantly our words can point someone to Jesus and his love.

When we have Jesus living inside of us all our words can be his very own words. What would Jesus say? His words will be honey. Gracious, sweet, kind, encouraging, gentle, and never mean. Can we talk this same way? Can good words drip out of our mouth like honey? Yes! How? By remembering that Jesus loves us and has said all the gracious things to us that fill up our hearts. The more we believe what Jesus says to us, the more we can say those same kinds of things to others.

Because of Jesus our hearts are full of God’s kindness.

With Jesus we can say kind thins to others.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Create a “Honey Pot of Kind Words.” Take a jar and fill with slips of paper that have kind words on them. Keep it on the table where you can practice saying kind and gracious things to each other.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, help me to always say gracious and kind things to others. I know I can because your words are in my heart. Amen.
