TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. SEPTEMBER 9: TRUST.

THINK TOGETHER.

Why do you think we should read the Bible?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 22:19. That your trust may be in the Lord, I have made them known to you today, even to you.

Why learn wisdom? Why read Proverbs? Why read the Bible?

There are many good answers to these questions. You might say we read the Bible to know what to do? Or maybe we read the Bible so that we don’t mess up and become fools. Certainly these two answers are all over the book of Proverbs.

But the greatest reason to read the Bible and the greatest reason for gaining wisdom is so that we learn how to trust God. In fact, that’s what real wisdom is, isn’t it? Proverbs has taught us that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” And what is this “fear of the Lord?” It is trusting him with all of our hearts (Prov. 3:5-6). It is loving what he loves. It is putting him at the center of all we say and do.

Solomon didn’t write and collect all these proverbs just so that his kids could have a “better life” here on Earth. He did it so that they would learn to trust God. Trusting God is the whole point of living. It is the meaning of life. It is why we are here on Earth. Above everything else, God wants us to trust him. Trusting him is even greater than loving him or obeying him. You can love someone that you don’t trust or believe, and you can obey someone without trusting them too (like a slave obeying a master). But when you trust someone with your whole heart, you are saying not only do I love you, and not only will I obey you, but I believe that you are good and that everything you do and ask me to do is right.

Do you trust God like this?

If it’s hard for you to trust God start by looking at Jesus. If God would send us his only Son to die for us on the cross, and if we can trust him to save our souls from sin and hell, then maybe, just maybe, we can trust him with everything else.

Because of Jesus we know we can trust God.

With Jesus even when it is hard to love God we can still trust him.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, when I read the Bible I want to trust you and trust my Heavenly Father too. Help me to not only obey you, but to believe you are good. Amen.
