Romans 6:5. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
Sadly, many people only think about Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday. Maybe they only go to church once a year, and that’s when they hear about Jesus rising from the dead again.
Maybe you go to church every week. Maybe you even hear about Jesus’ resurrection each week in church, but then, if you are like me, you easily forget about it for the rest of the week. Do you ever think about Jesus’ resurrection on a Wednesday afternoon? Or on Saturday morning?
But the resurrection is the most important thing we believe. That means it should be the most important thing that we think about all the time. What do you think about the most? Whatever it is, it is fair to say that it is very important to you. So if you don’t ever think about the resurrection, well then maybe it is not that important to you. But it needs to be. Why? Because it changes everything. It helps us with everything. If we will let it.
How does Jesus’ resurrection help us? Well, because it isn’t just HIS resurrection, it is YOUR resurrection too. What does Paul say in our verse? We shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
When Jesus rose from the dead it proved that God would keep his promises and that everything turned out perfect for Jesus. He wasn’t left dead in a grave – he was made alive with a perfect body. And the Bible teaches us that because Jesus rose from the dead, and he is the creator and king of the universe, everything in all creation will be made perfect too one day – including all who trust in Jesus to save them.
Have you done that? Have you trusted in Jesus to forgive you and save you from sin and death? If you have then you have been united in a resurrection like his. Everything will be alright in the end. Everything will be perfect actually. And you need to think about this everyday (not just on Easter or on Sundays).
You need this truth every single day.
You need it for when you feel sad and hopelessness.
You need it for when your feelings get hurt.
You need it for when you feel stressed out.
You need it for your anger and your grudges.
You need it for when you fail.
You need it for when you don’t get what you want.
You need it when you are tempted to turn things in this life into the most important things (idols).
You need it to rest. To rest? Yes, not just physically but spiritually. Knowing that you will be resurrected like Jesus means that we don’t have to earn or prove ourselves to God anymore. Jesus already did that. He already defeated all sin. Now we can rest, knowing that no matter what happens in this world, we will be with God in a perfect world one day.
You: Can you say what the resurrection of Jesus means to you?
You in Christ: How does God’s promise that we will be resurrected like Jesus prove that we are forgiven and free from sin?
Christ in you: How does it feel knowing that you will be resurrected like Jesus?
Prayer: Father, when things get hard help me to remember that I will be resurrected like Jesus and go to Heaven like him too. Amen.
