TLIC FAMILY. DAY 177. JUNE 26: ADOPTION AS SONS.

THINK TOGETHER

What does adoption mean? Do you know anyone that has been adopted?

READ TOGETHER

The Bible says that when we trust in Jesus to be our savior God adopts us as his sons. Listen to how Paul describes what happens to us here in Galatians 4:

Galatians 4:4-7. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

Adoption is a wonderful thing. When a mom and/or dad decide to bring a boy or girl into their family and share all that they have with that child and love them forever – this is a beautiful picture of what God does for us.

In Jesus and Paul’s day people might even adopt one of their slaves. A slave was someone you owned, someone you could make do all your work. Someone who had to earn their place in the house. But then sometimes a slave would be adopted and turned into a son. They went from being owned to owning everything. They became the heir of the entire family fortune. Paul says that we “are no longer slaves, but sons, and if a son, then an heir through God.”

This shows us just how great God’s love for us really is. You see, God didn’t just free us from our slavery to sin and to death. He didn’t set us free and then leave us wandering around outside of his house begging for scraps. He took us into his house. He made us into his children. He lets us have everything that Jesus has.

And now every day we can cry out to God as our “Abba.” Our dad. Our papa.

And that is what Christianity really is – having a relationship with God as a good, good dad. It is being in his family and living in his house and sharing everything with our big brother, Jesus.

Have you been adopted by God? Are you trusting in Jesus? Have you received his gift of forgiveness and freedom from sin? If you have then welcome home.

Because of Jesus we are part of god’s forever family.

With Jesus we can cry out to God any time as our good dad.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Watch the movie Annie together. Here’s a clip of “I Think I’m Gonna Like It Here.” Is this how you feel about being God’s child?

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

You are my big brother who shares all that is yours with me. Help me to trust our dad just like you do.

Amen.
