THINK TOGETHER
Do you have a favorite superhero? How did they get their super powers?

The Christians in Corinth didn’t always act very much like Jesus. Often they fought, and argued, and were pretty mean to each other. Do you ever act that way?
Another thing the Corinthians did was pick favorites – favorite pastors like Paul or Apollos. Listen to how the Apostle Paul describes the Corinthian Christians here:
1 Corinthians 3:3-4. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not being merely human?
Paul uses words like “jealousy and strife (arguing)” to describe them. But he also says that they are acting like “mere humans.”
When a superhero with super powers chooses to not use their super powers they are acting “merely human.” They have stopped living up to the power that they have. But when a superhero chooses to use their powers to help others, then they are being more than merely human. They are being superhuman.
With Jesus and his love inside of us by the Holy Spirit we are like superheroes. We have the power of God inside of us. The power of his love and goodness. But like a superhero with brand new powers, we have to learn how to use the power of Jesus’ love that is inside of us. We have to learn how to be kind. We have to learn how to love our enemies. We have to learn how to choose the right thing. We have to learn how to not be so jealous of others or pick favorites.
And with Jesus we can.
How? By trusting that he is always with us and that he always loves us no matter what. Like Jesus, our greatest superpower is faith and love. Jesus trusted God the Father. He trusted that the father loved him. And he trusted that the Father would rescue him, even from the grave. And when you have that much faith, then you can also love. You can love in a superhuman way – like Jesus did.
Because of Jesus we have the power of God inside of us.
With Jesus we can have superhuman faith and love.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Here’s a fun scene of Spiderman getting used to his new powers, not unlike Christians trying to be like Jesus.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus,
I don’t want to be jealous and pick favorites. Help me to remember that you love me and now I can love everyone too, just like you.
Amen.
