TLIC Family. Day 265. September 22: Grow up into Christ.

THINK TOGETHER

What are some of the ways you have been growing up over this past month? Year?

READ TOGETHER

God wants us to grow up. He wants us to get bigger and stronger, and he wants us to become more mature and less and less like a little baby. Do you ever act like a baby? Do you ever act more grown up?

But God doesn’t want us to only grow up physically, he wants us to grow up spiritually too. Listen here to how Paul describes it to the Ephesian Christians:

Ephesians 4:15-16. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

The picture Paul uses is a little funny. He wants us to imagine an adult head on a baby’s body. Imagine if your mom or dad had their same head with a little baby body attached. Pretty weird huh?

But Paul says that’s how we are. Our head is Jesus and he is fully grown up in love. But we are the little baby body attached to him that is still learning how to love. As our head Jesus is feeding us, just like your physical head feeds the rest of your body. Jesus is constantly loving us no matter what and that is what helps us, his body, to grow up.

How do you grow up physically? How do you bet bigger and stronger? By eating and drinking.

How do you grow up spiritually? How do you become more like Jesus? By eating and drinking his love for you. In other words, by always remembering and trusting in his love.

How do we know that we are growing up into Jesus? How can we tell that we are growing spiritually? The answer is when we start to love like Jesus does, and, as Paul says, build each other up in love.

Because of Jesus we are growing up to be like him.

With Jesus we can love others and build them up.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Look at baby pictures together. Talk about how much the kids have grown up. And then talk about how God wants us to grow up into Jesus too – more trusting and more kind.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

Help me to not only grow up physically, but also spiritually. And help me to build up others with your love.

Amen.
