TLIC Family. Day 289. October 16: You have been filled in him.

What are some things that make you feel happy?

Every human being wants to feel good inside. We all want to feel full not empty. Have you ever felt empty inside? We’ve all felt empty at one time or another. We’ve all felt like things don’t matter or like we aren’t loved or important.

And when we feel empty inside what do we try to do? We try to fill our hearts with things that make us feel better. More important. More valuable. More special.

What makes you feel good inside? What makes you feel special or important?

Maybe it’s getting good grades. Or being good at a sport. Or having lots of friends. Or being the funniest one in your class. Or playing video games. Or being the well behaved one in your family. Or being the strongest, fastest, tallest.

We have all tried to feel full inside by being better, doing more, achieving, winning, performing. But the problem is that all the things we add to our life to feel full inside just end up leaving us feeling empty again eventually. Why? Because they don’t last. When I was in middle school I tried to feel full inside by being really good at basketball. But then I got hurt and couldn’t play one year. And then I went to high school and met even better players than me. And then I got really old and couldn’t run and jump very well anymore.

Here’s the important lesson that we all need to learn as we grow up – all the things that we use to make us feel full, important, or special will never last. They either come to an end or just stop making us feel good.

And here’s the problem – wen we feel empty inside we will start to become more and more selfish in order to feel important again.

And so here’s the solution – listen to what Paul tells the Colossians about feeling full inside:

Colossians 2:9-10. For in [Jesus] the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.

Jesus fills us up! He makes us important. He makes us special. He makes us loved no matter what. And guess what? He never ends. We never outgrow him and his love and goodness never run out. With Jesus we never have to feel empty again. We never have to be selfish again. We never have to be better than everyone else in order to feel good, and we never have to get everything right in order to be good. Jesus is all we will ever need.

Because of Jesus we are full of all of his love and all of his goodness.

With Jesus we never have to feel empty again.

Help your child make a list of the things that make them feel special. Talk about how these things are good gifts from God but they can never last forever and might even start to control us. Talk about how only Jesus can love us no matter what and always forgive us and when he controls us we actually become less selfish and more loving like him.

I often feel empty inside and try to be filled up with things that don’t last or just make me more selfish. I know you are the only one that can make me full inside. Help me to feel your love for me today and every day.
