TLIC Family. Day 329. November 25: Mount Zion.

THINK TOGETHER

Have you ever gone hiking up a mountain? What was it like?

READ TOGETHER

If the Bible were a movie we might call it “The Tale of Two Mountains.” After Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, God did everything in his power to live with his people again. In the Old Testament the first place he would meet his people was on Mount Sinai. Do you remember anything about Mount Sinai?

Mount Sinai is where God gave Moses the laws. God was on top of the mountain and there was thunder, and lightning, and earthquakes, and loud noises, and it was all very, very scary. Only Moses could go up Mount Sinai. And the people couldn’t even get close to the mountain or they would die. Everyone, including Moses, was terrified.

But then God led his people to the Promised Land. And in the Promised Land God would meet his people on a new mountain, Mount Zion.

Mount Zion was where Abraham took Isaac his son to sacrifice him to God, but God gave Abraham a substitute ram in Isaac’s place. Do you remember that story?

Mount Zion was where King David would live and worship God. And Mount Zion is where the Temple of God was built. The place where people could come and meet God and find forgiveness.

Which Mountain would you want to live on? Mount Sinai or Mount Zion? The book of Hebrews says that Christians are living at Mount Zion. Listen to how it is described here in Hebrews 12:

Hebrews 12:22-24. 22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

The two different mountains represent two different ways to try to relate to God.

Mount Zion = earn your way to God by obeying all his laws and rules. This is terrifying.

Mount Zion = simply trust Jesus and his love for you no matter what. This is amazing! Enjoy the party.

If you are a Christian, then you HAVE COME to Mount Zion. Jesus is there. All the saints are there. Angels are there. God is there. And YOU ARE THERE. So come boldly to God. Pray to him. Enjoy his love and his kindness. And don’t ever worry about whether or not he still likes you. He does! And he always will.

Because of Jesus you live on Mount Zion with God.

With Jesus you can go to God boldly anytime, all the time.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Draw a picture of life on Mount Zion together. Don’t forget Jesus, the saints of old, the angels, and of course, yourselves.

And here’s a good song to listen to while you draw.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

You made a better home for us at Mount Zion away from Mount Sinai. Help me to always trust that I don’t have to earn my way to you ever again. Thank you!

Amen.
