TLIC FAMILY. DAY 157. JUNE 6: UPON YOU.

THINK TOGETHER

Do you know what Jesus’ ascension was? (when Jesus returned to heaven from earth forty days after his resurrection)

READ TOGETHER

Imagine how cool it must have been to see Jesus standing in front of you and then slowly rise up into heaven as angels are gathered around. And at the same time imagine how both scary and sad it must have been for Jesus’ disciples. Their best friend, and teacher was leaving them. But they wouldn’t be left alone. Listen to how the book of Acts describes Jesus’ ascension:

Acts 1:8-11. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

For Christians Jesus’ ascension is a pretty big deal. Why?

First, it’s a big deal because now Jesus is seated on the throne of heaven ruling the whole universe. And don’t forget that Jesus is still a human being. This means that a person is ruling everything. Why is that important? Because it means that one day we can rule with him over all things.

Second, it’s a big deal because it means that we can have the Holy Spirit inside of us. Jesus said, “the Holy Spirit will come upon you.” And he said that we would “receive power.” Every Christian has the power of God inside of them. Power over all of our fears and all of our guilt. With God inside of us we never have to be afraid and we never have to doubt his love. And that is great power.

And third, it’s a big deal because now we can be witnesses for Jesus wherever we go. Jesus told his disciples to be my witnesses in “Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the whole world.” Where do you live? What is the name of your town? Your state? Your country? Who can you tell about Jesus?

Every Christian is a witness for Jesus because Jesus is in every Christian. And by his power inside of us we can tell everyone about him and his great love.

Because of Jesus we have the Holy Spirt and his power living in us.

With Jesus we can be his witnesses wherever we go.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Talk together about who you can tell about Jesus. Who can you invite to church?

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

I want to be your witness. You have given me your power, the power of love, that I need to tell others about you. Help me to tell others the good news.

Amen.
