Who is your favorite super hero? How did they get their super powers?

I like super hero stories. Do you? A lot of superheroes were once normal everyday people who then had something enter into them and change them from the outside to the inside, giving them super powers.

The Bible says that something similar happens to us when we trust in Jesus to save us. When we receive his life as our own, we are receiving the Holy Spirit into our hearts.

Do you remember how the Bible told us about Jesus’ ascension up into heaven? Well it also tells us about how the Holy Spirit came down from heaven to take Jesus’ place. Except now the Holy Spirit isn’t just WITH us, he is IN us as a spirit.

Here’s how the book of Acts describes what happened when the Holy Spirit came:

Acts 2:1-2. When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. ² And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. ³ And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. ⁴ And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit….

When we receive the Holy Spirit it’s like receiving a super power – the super power of Jesus’ life. Jesus promised us that he would come to us when he sends the Holy Spirit.

John 14:18. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

And Jesus promised that we would have his very own love:

John 15:9. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 

His joy:

John 15:11. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

And his peace:

John 14:27. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.

Now everything that Jesus asks us to do, we CAN do! Why? Because we have Jesus’ own love, joy, and peace in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

But like every superhero we have to learn how to live with our new powers. We have to learn how to love like Jesus, and have joy like Jesus, and have peace like Jesus. And it won’t be easy, but it will be possible as we learn to trust Jesus more and more each day.

Because of Jesus we have the Holy Spirit living in us.

With Jesus we can live in his love, joy, and peace every day.

Watch this scene from Spiderman together. Talk about how Peter had to learn to use his superpowers. In the same way we have to learn to trust that we have Jesus’ love, joy, and peace inside of us.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

You have given me the Holy Spirit when I trusted in you to save me. Help me to live from his love, joy, and peace every day.

Amen.
