We’ve talked a lot about Jesus dying on the cross for us and rising from the dead for us. And, of course, these are two very important truths about Jesus. Because Jesus died on the cross for us we can be forgiven of all our sins. And because Jesus rose from the dead for us we can receive his new eternal life. We can live forever!
But how? How do we get Jesus’ life inside of us?
Here’s how the Apostle Paul explains it to the Corinthians:
1 Corinthians 15:45. Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
So first of all we have to understand that Paul is calling Jesus “the last Adam.” There was a first Adam who lived in the Garden of Eden and sinned causing all of us to be sinners. And there is the “last Adam,” Jesus, who never sinned which allows all of us to be like Jesus with his life.
But again, how? How does that happen? It happens because Jesus became “a life giving spirit.”
After rising from the dead Jesus lived on earth for 40 more days. He met people. He talked to people. He ate with people. He showed people the holes in his hands and feet. And then Jesus went back up into heaven. This is called the ascension of Jesus. Can you say ascension? Ascension just means that Jesus went up. Up into heaven.
But Jesus’ ascension is very important. When Jesus ascended to heaven his body remained seated on a throne next to the Father. But his spirit is living inside every single person that believes in him. Jesus’ spirit is the Holy Spirit. And that is why sometimes we say “Jesus lives in my heart,” and sometimes we say “the Holy Spirit lives in me.” Both are true.
And when Jesus and the Holy Spirit live inside of you, you have God’s very own eternal life. You have all of God’s love and goodness in your heart forever. And now you can share God’s life with others too as you tell them about Jesus and his love and goodness on the cross.
Because of Jesus we have God’s eternal life inside our hearts by the Holy Spirit.
With Jesus we can live like we’re always connected to God.
