TLIC FAMILY. DAY 284. OCTOBER 11: DELIVERED.

THINK TOGETHER

Have you ever been rescued from danger?

READ TOGETHER

I can think of two times when I was rescued from death. Once when I was little I fell into a swimming pool’s deep end but couldn’t swim. Someone jumped in and rescued me from drowning. And once when I was an adult I was choking on a piece of candy and someone heimliched me and got the piece of candy out.

Jesus has rescued us from death. And not just from death but from an entire kingdom of darkness. Listen to how the Apostle Paul says it to the Christians in Colossae:

Colossians 1:13-14. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

There are many people who call themselves “Christians” who use Jesus as a simple addition to their life. Jesus gives them good advice, or Jesus is a good example of how to be kind and loving. But in the end my life is still about me and what I want to do.

But Jesus is not just a good teacher for us, or a good example, or even a just a good friend. Yes, he is all those things, but he is much, much more. He is our Savior. He is our Rescuer. He is our Deliverer.

For many people Jesus is an add-on.

Today I will go to school, and I will play soccer, and I will have a piano lesson, and I will do my homework, and I will play video games, and oh yes, I will spend a little time with Jesus in addition to everything else that I have to do today.

This is what the Christians in Colossae were doing with Jesus. They wanted to add Jesus on to their religion. But they forgot who Jesus really is and what he has really done. Jesus doesn’t want to be your add-on to your life. Jesus wants to give you a whole new life. A whole new way to live. A new way to go to school. A new way to play soccer and learn piano. A new way to do homework. A new way to play games. He doesn’t want to be one more thing that you do today. He wants to be your everything. And he wants you to do everything for him and from him. For his kingdom not your own.

Because of Jesus we can and will worship God forever.

With Jesus we can do everything for him and from him.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Watch the end of The Prince of Egypt together. Talk about how God delivered the Hebrews from Egypt not to be an add-on but to be their God that they would worship with their whole lives. Jesus stills wants the same thing as our deliverer.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

You have delivered me from the evil kingdom of the darkness of my own selfish sins. And you have made me a part of your kingdom. Be my King today!

Amen.
