In what ways are you growing?

Growing is very important isn’t it? If you aren’t growing, then something is wrong. Every parent wants to see that their little baby is getting bigger and stronger. And now that you are getting bigger you are probably aware of how you are growing. Did your shoe size get larger this past year? Are you taller? And we don’t just grow physically do we? We also grow intellectually – our minds grow. Have you been learning new things? Are you reading harder books? Are you doing more difficult math problems? Hopefully.

God wants us to grow. He wants us to grow physically, intellectually, and also spiritually. Peter calls it “growing in the grace.” Here’s how he says it to his readers in his second letter:

2 Peter 3:18. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

We know that you’re growing in shoe size and in reading ability, but are you also growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus? I hope so.

But how do we know if we are growing in the grace of Jesus? Growing in height is obvious, and growth in school is measured by our grades. But how do you measure growth in grace?

First, are you able to admit that you need God’s help more and more? If you can more easily admit that you depend on Jesus, then you are growing in his grace.

Also, are you showing grace to others more easily. Are you kinder? Nicer? Do you share more? Do you say encouraging things to others? If you see yourself showing more grace to others, then you are likely growing in the grace of Jesus.

This new year you will likely grow a lot. You’ll get taller, smarter, faster, and you’ll be able to do lots more things on your own. But don’t forget about growing in grace too. That’s the most important growing we can do.

Because of Jesus we have all of God’s grace.

With Jesus we can grow in his grace forever and ever.

Look at some old photos together or the place on the wall where you mark how much you’ve grown over the years. Talk about how we grow – is it fast or slow? Is it easy or hard? Growing in grace is no different. We can’t see ourselves growing often until we look back over a period of time.

Your grace is the best thing ever. Help me to keep growing in your grace for the rest of my life.
