THINK TOGETHER
Who is your best friend? What do you like to do together?
READ TOGETHER
The Apostle John wrote several books of the New Testament. He wrote the Gospel of John, and he wrote the book of Revelation, and he wrote three little letters – 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John. Can you find 1 John in your Bible?
Here’s how 1 John begins:
1 John 1:1-4. That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.
John begins this letter to Christians by reminding them that they have “fellowship” with the Father and the Son (Jesus).
But what is “fellowship?” What does that word mean?
It means partnership and friendship. Have you ever had to work on a school project with your friend? Or may you built something together with your mom or dad. That’s the kind of relationship we have with Jesus and the Father. We are partners. We are friends. We are family. We work together and care about others together.
Sometimes Christians think the way to measure how good of a Christian you are is to look at how often you read your Bible, or pray, or go to church. But those thing don’t really prove too much by themselves. The real measure of a true Christian is their fellowship (friendship) with Jesus? Do they think about him, talk to him, share life with him, do what he does, work toward the same goal as him? And of course reading the Bible, praying, and going to church help us to grow in our friendship with Jesus, don’t they?
Do you have a relationship with Jesus? Do you talk to him? Listen to him through the Bible? Do you trust him? Do you remember that he is with you wherever you go? That’s fellowship. That’s real life.
Because of Jesus we have fellowship with God.
With Jesus we can live all of our lives together with God.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Is there a family project that you can work on together today or this week? That’s fellowship! Partnering and sharing a goal together. Talk about how Jesus wants us to share in his project of spreading his love to everyone through the message of the cross.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus,
You have made a relationship with God possible? Thank you for inviting me to be your friend and partner.
Amen.
