TLIC FAMILY. DAY 343. DECEMBER 9: AN ADVOCATE.

THINK TOGETHER

Has there ever been a time when someone stood up for you or defended you?

READ TOGETHER

You’ve probably figured out by now that just because you are a Christian doesn’t mean you don’t sin anymore. Christians still sin don’t they? Have you sinned yet today?

The good news of Jesus isn’t just that he died for our sins in the past, but that his death for us covers all of our sins, even our sins today, tomorrow, and until we die. Here’s how John explains I in his first letter:

1 John 2:1-2. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

John knows that we will keep sinning. But John also knows that when we do sin two important things are true. The first one is in verse 2 – “He is the propitiation for our sins.” Can you say “pro-pi-ti-ation?”  The word propitiation means that Jesus has taken away all our guilt. And best of all, God will never see us as guilty ever again. Even if you sin right now God will not count it against you if you are trusting in Jesus. No matter what, you are no longer condemned.

The second important thing is in verse 1 – “we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” Do you know what an advocate is? An advocate is someone who speaks up for you on your behalf. An advocate stands up for you. They are your friend and helper. That’s who Jesus is to us all of the time, but especially when we sin. When we sin Jesus reminds us and the Father that we have been forgiven and that he is our propitiation. He reminds God the judge that we are not condemned. He stands up for us as our friend. Jesus is the best!

Jesus is our propitiation and he is our advocate. With these two things we are truly covered by God’s grace forever.

Because of Jesus all of our sins have been propitiated for by his cross.

With Jesus we have and advocate that will always stand up and speak up for us.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Talk about how Jesus stands up for us. He never blames us. He never picks on us or bullies us. He always reminds us that we are loved and cared for. Is there someone that you can be an advocate for? Who can you stand up for or speak up for? Who can you be a friend to – someone who doesn’t have many friends?

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus,

You are my best friend who saved me and sticks up for me all the time. You’re the best!

Amen.
