What is an image? Can you find an image of something in your house? (a photograph).
READ TOGETHER
Genesis 1:26. Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.
The Bible says that God made everything in six days. Light, and sky, and water, and land, and plants and animals. Then on the sixth day God made the most important of all his creation – people. But why are people the most important? Because we are made in God’s image and likeness.
Have you ever made a model of something? Or taken a picture of something? If you have, then you have made something that is an “image and a likeness.”
When the Bible says that each of us is made in God’s image and likeness, it means that every single person is special and important to God, no matter how different they might seem to us. It is important that we care about everyone because every single person is an image or picture of God.
But being in the image of God means something more important than just being a picture of God. In the Bible, the words “image and likeness” means that you are someone’s son or daughter. Look at how the Bible describes Adam and Eve having a son:
Genesis 5:3. Adam fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth.
Adam’s son, Seth, looked and acted like his dad, Adam. Do you look or act like your mom or dad? In what ways?
Jesus is the Son of God who looks and acts like his Father, God. He is THE “image and likeness” of God because he is God’s son. He acts exactly like the Father does. He’s just as kind, and loving, and perfect, and fair as God.
And now, because Jesus came to earth to love us and to forgive all our sins, we can look and act like Jesus. Just like Jesus, we can trust God’s love for us and love like God does. When we know and trust that Jesus loves us, and that he has taken away our sin, then we too can be children of God just like Jesus. We can be the “image and likeness” of God.
Because of Jesus you can trust that God loves you and that he forgives all your sins.
With Jesus you can care for others like he does.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Take a selfie of your family and talk through all the ways the kids look like mom and dad.
- Besides looking like mom and dad how else do you “image” them?
- How can your family look like God’s family (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit)?
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, thank you for making me in your image. Help me to treat everyone with kindness like you do. Amen.
