THINK TOGETHER.
Have you ever acted without thinking first? What happened?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 2:10-15. 10for wisdom will come into your heart…12delivering you from men of perverted speech, 13who forsake the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness, 14who rejoice in doing evil and delight in the perverseness of evil, 15men whose paths are crooked, and who are devious in their ways.
Yikes! These guys sound terrible don’t they? Solomon is describing people that are really, really bad. Not only do they do wicked things, but they like doing wicked things. They rejoice in doing evil, and delight in it. Everything they say and everything they do is meant to get what they want, even if they have to lie and trick to get it.
I sure hope this doesn’t describe you. And I sure hope it doesn’t describe the people you are friends with. When you love wisdom (love God) you will be very careful about who you are friends with. You won’t let people who love being bad influence you to be bad like them because you are wise enough to know that delighting in sin only leads to more trouble. But more importantly delighting in sin is not loving is it? Delighting in evil is never, ever God’s love and kindness in us.
When Jesus taught his disciples how to pray he prayed these words, “Our Father in Heaven…deliver us from evil.” Jesus’ prayer was wise. It came from the book of Proverbs. Jesus was like Solomon teaching his children to be smart and stay away from those who like to do bad things. Of course, the person who is the most evil, and delights in doing evil the most, is Satan himself. And how are we delivered from Satan? By trusting in Jesus alone to save us from our sin by his death on the cross for us. And that’s the wisest thing you can ever do.
Because of Jesus we can be delivered from the most evil one – Satan.
With Jesus we will delight in doing good, not bad.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Talk with your kids about their friends. Do any of their friends delight in doing bad things?
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, you have delivered me from evil by your cross. Help me to never delight in doing bad things, and to stay away from people who do. Amen.
