TLIC FAMILY: PROVERBS. DAY 49. FEBRUARY 18: LIVE.

THINK TOGETHER.

What are some ways that your parents teach you?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 4:1-4. 1Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight, 2for I give you good precepts; do not forsake my teaching. 3When I was a son with my father, tender, the only one in the sight of my mother, 4he taught me and said to me, “Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments, and live.

Solomon wants his kids to be wise. He wants them to hear him, to be attentive (pay attention) to him, and not forsake his teaching. Solomon remembers how he was taught by his dad (King David) and now he is passing that wisdom down to his own children. Now remember, King David and King Solomon weren’t just passing down their own personal wisdom to their kids. The wisdom in this book is not stuff that Solomon just made up on his own. And the wisdom that David wrote in the psalms were not simply his own thoughts. Both of these dads had wisdom from God. God is the ultimate father teaching his children how to be wise.

Parents, make sure the wisdom you teach is the wisdom of God – to honor him, love him, and to care about what he cares about. And kids, make sure that you listen to the wisdom of your parents because their wisdom is how God himself is teaching you. To forsake mom and dad’s teaching is to forsake God’s teaching.

Solomon says that if we hold fast to wisdom we will live (v.4). He doesn’t mean simply living physically. He means living a good life. Jesus said that the way to live a good life, an abundant life, is to let him be our wisdom, our shepherd, our parent. We must hold fast to the words of Jesus if we want to live forever in eternal happiness. What instruction does Jesus give us? Simply believe in him.

John 11:25. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.

Because of Jesus we can live an abundant life of trusting him.

With Jesus we can be wise and trust God by listening to our parents.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Parents, share with your kids some things that God has taught you over the years.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, I trust you. You are my eternal life. Help me to be wise and listen to my parents, especially when they teach me about you. Amen.
