TLIC FAMILY: PROVERBS. DAY 53. FEBRUARY 22: BE ATTENTIVE.

THINK TOGETHER.

Are you good at concentrating? Why or why not?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 4:20-21. 20My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. 21Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart.

Do you sometimes act like you’re listening to mom and dad but your mind is actually wandering all over the place as you think about other things? Do you hear them tell you what to do and then turn around and do the exact opposite thing? In school, do you have to be reminded to pay attention? Do you care about what the teacher is saying? Hopefully your answer to these questions is yes.

Here in Proverbs 4, Solomon is telling his son to be attentive or to concentrate on what he is being taught. God wants children to listen to the wisdom of their parents and teachers. But more importantly, he wants them to keep it in their heart. Your heart is the inside part of you that desires things and cares about things. Solomon doesn’t just want his children to listen to him, he wants them to care about what he is saying. He wants their hearts to be changed by the wisdom of God.

Jesus came so that we would not only know about God and his wisdom, but so that it would change our hearts. When we know and trust Jesus as our Wisdom it transforms our hearts, it changes what we care about. When we listen to Jesus (incline your ear) and look at Jesus (let them not escape from your sight) through the stories about Jesus in the Bible, it changes our hearts. When we hear and see the love of God in Jesus it lets us know over and over again that we are loved by God and that we can love like God. And even better, God has poured his love into our hearts by the presence of the Holy Spirit who lives in our hearts forever.

Romans 5:5. God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

Because of Jesus we have God’s wise love in our hearts.

With Jesus we can pay attention to God’s wisdom and love others too.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Play a concentration game together (simon says, a matching game, battleship). Talk about how important it is to pay attention, especially to Jesus and his love.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, help me listen and pay attention, especially to you.
