Proverbs 4:23. Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
This might be one of the most important verses in all of Proverbs, and one of the most important lessons in all of life – Keep your heart. Your heart is the deepest part of you that decides what you are going to love and care about. Everything flows from a person’s heart, their thoughts, their choices, and their emotions all come from the heart. That’s why Solomon says that out of the heart flow the springs of life. What we love determines who we truly are, and who we are becoming. Everything you will say today will come from your heart. Every choice you make, good or bad, will come from your heart. Everything you think about will start in the heart with what you care about the most.
But what does it mean to keep our heart with all vigilance? The word keep means to guard, protect, or watch over. Because everything flows from your heart it is super wise to protect your heart. That means not letting evil into your heart. If you listen to or watch wicked things, chances are you will want to do those same things. Or if you listen to people who say that you have to “be true to yourself” and do whatever you want to do, you will fill your heart up with selfishness and pride.
But if you let Jesus into your heart and trust in him, if you know that he loves you no matter what and forgives all your sins, then your heart will be protected from pride and selfishness, from fear and worrying, from insecurity and feeling unloved. The best way to keep your heart safe is to keep believing in Jesus.
John 7:38. Whoever believes in me [Jesus], as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’
Because of Jesus we have God’s love inside to guard our hearts.
With Jesus our hearts can overflow with the springs of his love and kindness.

The best way to protect your heart is to believe in and worship Jesus. Sing a favorite worship song together to help guard your hearts today.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, help me to guard my heart today by believing that you love me. Amen.
