TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. MARCH 22: FATHER, MOTHER.

THINK TOGETHER.

Do you listen to mom and dad? What makes this easy? Hard?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 6:20. My son, keep your father’s commandment, and forsake not your mother’s teaching.

One of the very first things that God created was the family. God mad Adam and God made Eve. Then God told them to have babies and to be a family. This is how they would fill up the earth with people who love God and love each other. This is how they would fill up the earth with the image of God.

Now babies aren’t born already knowing right from wrong are they? They are not born with built in wisdom. They have to be taught don’t they? Who does God want to teach all the babies how to love and obey him? Fathers and mothers. Moms and dads are given the right and the responsibility by God to teach their children his ways. And children are told by God to always listen to their parents.

In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul will say, “Children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” Notice those three words in the middle – in the Lord. The Apostle is saying that when we obey our parents it is the same as obeying the Lord. If Jesus asked you to clean your room, or to stop arguing, or to go to bed would you do it? If your answer is yes, then you should do all these things when mom and dad ask too.

But in the Lord means more than you SHOULD listen to your parents like you would Jesus. It means that because you have Jesus living in you (do you have Jesus living in you?), you CAN listen to your parents. Because you can trust Jesus you can also trust mom and dad. And even when mom and dad get it wrong (and they will sometimes), you can still trust that Jesus will never get it wrong.

Because of Jesus moms and dads can love and teach their children.

With Jesus you can listen to and obey your mom and dad.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Moms and Dads, do you have a plan for teaching your children the wisdom of God? Take the time to explain to your kids why you do these things (go to church, family devotions, read the Bible together, etc.).

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, I trust you. Help me to trust and obey my mom and dad too.
