THINK TOGETHER:
Do you know what contentment is? Are you content?
READ TOGETHER:
When someone is greedy they only want more and more and more. More money. More games. More toys. More clothes. Have you ever been greedy for more and more stuff?
The truth is that all of us have been greedy for more. And greed is one of the most dangerous sins that can take over our hearts. With Christmas coming you might even be able to see just how greedy you can be. Are you hoping and even asking for more things they you could ever possibly use? Then you might be greedy.
Paul didn’t want Timothy to be greedy. Instead he wanted him to be content. Listen to how he says it to Timothy here:
1 Timothy 6:6-8. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.
The opposite of greedy is content. To be content means that you are fine with whatever you already have. And you’re even fine if you give away what you have. The content person doesn’t need more, more, more. They are happy no matter what because they have what Paul calls “godliness.”
Ever Christian is godly. What does “godly” mean? It means that you have the love and goodness of God living inside of you. And every Christian has God’s love and goodness in them because they have God himself living inside of them. Jesus lives in us, the Holy Spirit live sin us, and the Father lives in us. God is in all who have trusted in God for salvation through the work of Jesus on the cross.
Are you godly?
If you are, then you too can be content. Why? Because when you have God you have everything you could ever want or need. And that means you never have to be greedy and you can always share.
Because of Jesus we will always have everything we need and really want.
With Jesus we can be content and share what we have.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Watch one of the many versions of A Christmas Carol together. Talk about Scrooge’s greed and discontent. What changed his heart? The Bible says godliness can change our hearts – knowing that we have Jesus and his salvation.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus,
You were never greedy and always content and that’s why you could share your life with us. Now I can do the same thing – share my life with others. Help me to be content and to think about sharing each and every day.
Amen.
