THINK TOGETHER
Who is your favorite superhero? How does your favorite superhero save the day?
READ TOGETHER
When God put Adam and Eve into the beautiful Garden of Eden he gave them a choice. Do you remember what that choice was? They could trust God and eat from the Tree of Life, or they could reject God and eat from the Tree of Knowing Good and Evil.
What happened next is very sad. The Bible says that the Devil appeared as a serpent and tempted Adam and Eve to reject God. He made them think God was mean, that he was lying to them, and that he was trying to keep them from being like him (but remember, we are supposed to trust God, not BE God). And so Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Knowing Good and Evil. They sinned! They decided to not trust God’s love. Now, the saddest thing ever became true – because they were full of sin, they would never be able to live with God again. Unless….a superhero would come and save the day! And that is exactly what God said would happen. Speaking to the wicked serpent, here’s what God said:
Genesis 3:15. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.
This is very confusing isn’t it? Even grown-ups don’t understand it sometimes. God is promising that one day a baby will be born. He will be the offspring or child of a woman, and he will defeat the Devil and free us from our sin so that we can live with God forever. Who do you think that hero will be? That’s right, it’s Jesus! Jesus is our superhero. He is the one that came to save the day. But not only by crushing the serpent, but by letting himself be crushed for us on the cross. On the cross Jesus was hurt for us. He was separated from God instead of us. Why? So that we would never, ever have to live without God ever again.
Because of Jesus we can be rescued from sin.
With Jesus we can live with God forever.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Have fun dressing up like superheroes! Talk about how heroes help others and not themselves.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, you are the greatest hero ever! Thank you for rescuing me from sin and from death. Amen.
