THINK TOGETHER
Take a minute and tell each other some good news.
READ TOGETHER
One day when Jesus was on earth he went to church (they called it synagogue). Jesus walked up to the front of the room, took the Bible scroll (they read from scrolls not books) and he read these verses from Isaiah 61:
Isaiah 61:1-2. The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
Then Jesus calmly rolled the scroll back up and told everyone that this prophecy was about him. Jesus said that he IS God’s good news for all mankind.
Every single person needs the good news of Jesus, don’t they? The good news of Jesus is the story of what Jesus did for us on the cross. You see we don’t need Jesus to just tell us or show us how to be good. We need Jesus to be good FOR us. The good news is that Jesus was perfect for us. He did all the good things we could never do. But he also had the worst thing ever happen to him – he was punished on the cross for our sin. He was separated from the Father so that we would never, ever have to be separated from God again.
Did you notice who Isaiah said the good news is for? The poor. The brokenhearted. The captives. The sad. The good news is for all the people who know that they are poor, broken, and sad without Jesus.
Are you a sinner? Are you poor without Jesus? Are you sad without Jesus? Do you believe the good news? That Jesus was perfect for you. That he died for you? That he loves you and wants to take you to heaven to be with him? Me too.
Because of Jesus we can trust in the good news of his life and death for us.
With Jesus we can share the good news with others, letting them know that Jesus loves them too.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Talk about ways that your family can share the good news with others – inviting someone to church, or building a friendship with others.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, you are God’s best news ever. Thank you for doing everything God required for me on the cross. Amen.
