TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. MARCH 29: LIVE.

THINK TOGETHER.

What rules do you obey that literally keep you alive?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 7:2. keep my commandments and live;

Sometimes our obedience is a matter of life and death too, isn’t it? When you were younger you held dad’s hand while crossing the street because if you didn’t then you might not live very long. Or when mom told two-year-old you to take that tiny toy out of your mouth so that you wouldn’t choke on it she was keeping you alive.

That’s what all of God’s commandments do – they keep us alive. Not just physically, but also spiritually. When God gives us a command and when your parents teach you God’s commands, they are trying to make sure you stay alive. Yes, sometimes physically. But also they want you to stay alive spiritually by learning to love and trust God more and more. Here’s how the Apostle John says the same thing in one of his letters:

1 John 3:23-24. 23And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him.

What two commandments does John list? That’s right, 1) Believe in Jesus and 2) Love others. These are the two most important commandments of God and without them we will not live. If we don’t believe in Jesus we will not have eternal life. And if we do not love others we will not live the good life that God wants for us.

Never forget that all of God’s commandments are for our good. The commandment to trust Jesus gives us eternal life with God (abiding in him). And your parent’s commandments are from love and are meant to help you live a good life with God and others. So be wise. Listen. Trust. Obey. Love. And most importantly always trust that God loves you.

Because of Jesus we have eternal life.

With Jesus we can keep God’s commandments and live his good life.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Talk about your household rules together. How do they bring life?

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, I believe in you. Help me to obey you and love others like you do. That’s the good life! Amen.
